More male pre-school teachers in Singapore now – number has doubled over past 5 years

The Straits Times published an article showcasing the growth and significance of male preschool educators in the early childhood sector. Between 2019 and January 2024, the number of male educators nearly doubled, rising from 130 to 245. This increase is attributed to the sector’s expansion and efforts by the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) to attract more talent.

The article features NIEC (NP)’s alumni, Mr Muhammad Syahmi Supian who graduated from the Early Childhood Education (ECH) course in 2019 and Mr Matthew Jason Tjong who graduated from the Child Psychology & Early Education (CPEE) course in 2020. They shared their unique experiences as male preschool educators and their personal motivations for joining and staying in the sector. It also highlights how male preschool educators like themselves are valued for bringing diverse perspectives, challenging gender stereotypes, and serving as role models for children, especially for those lacking strong male figures at home.
