Mr Wu Qilong, a graduate from Ngee Ann Polytechnic with a Diploma in Child Psychology and Early Childhood Education, shared about his journey as a male in early childhood education on 8world interview by Hello Singapore. Beginning with his family’s initial objection to his career choice. His mother had a common societal view, believing it to be unsuitable for men. However, Qilong’s passion for the field, sparked by an inspiring primary school teacher, led him to pursue a diploma in Child Psychology and Early Childhood Education.
During his studies, hands-on experiences at various childcare centres deepened his passion while also highlighting the potential challenges he might face as a male educator. Qilong addressed these concerns by emphasising that genuine care and dedication are the cornerstones of effective teaching, regardless of gender. He reassured his family by sharing the joy he found in interacting with children during his placements.
Recognising the importance of maintaining appropriate boundaries, Qilong acknowledged the need for extra care when interacting physically with children. His school also shared its proactive measures to protect both teachers and children, such as assigning female colleagues to tasks like assisting children during bath time and other daily routines. Qilong hopes his story will encourage other men who are passionate about early childhood education to consider this rewarding career path, despite any initial apprehensions.
