AI usage rising in Singapore preschools, but experts warn against excessive screen time

NIEC Lead Specialist (Edtech Ofice, Information Technology) Ms Jaishree weighed in on the growing use of AI in preschools, noting that digital activities must be developmentally appropriate. She stressed the importance of avoiding passive screen time and focusing instead on interactive, purposeful learning. A balanced approach is key, so that children still get enough opportunities for physical play, social interaction, and creative exploration.

She added that technology should never replace the role of educators or real-world experiences. Instead, it should be thoughtfully guided by teachers and used to support – not take over – classroom learning. Her comments reflect the importance of aligning tech use with national guidelines and early childhood best practices.
