According to the Academy of Singapore Teachers (AST), an effective PLC serves as a catalyst for three critical areas of growth:
- Raising morale & capacity: PLCs can help ease the adult learner’s journey back to studying by providing a community that renews motivation. Not only does this morale boost help keep learners going, it also improves content mastery outcomes.
- Developing a collaborative culture: They say it takes a village to raise a child, and by fostering a collaborative environment, our aim is to groom educators who are more willing to step out of their comfort zones and experiment with progressive strategies.
- Improving student outcomes: By learning from peers and not just the textbook, NIEC trainees can gain diverse perspectives that will better help address learning gaps of children under their care.
Fostering Confidence in Early Childhood Practice through Ground-Up Initiatives
The collaborative spirit is often reflected within students from the NIEC community as well. NIEC (TP) graduate and Training Award (TA) Commendation Award recipient, Samuel Liu, embodied this by creating a platform for seniors to mentor juniors and exchange resources known as the Men in EC Club. His ground-up initiative was sparked by the observation that male students often lacked peer representation in a female-dominated sector.
Through his platform, he helped male ECs raise their voices in a safe space. Initiatives like these demonstrate how the EC fraternity works to ensure that no learner, regardless of their background or demographic, has to navigate their career transition in isolation.
