[NEW] Cultural Compass: Guiding EC Educators through Singapore’s Diversity

About Course

In this course, educators teaching in Singapore preschools will have a better understanding of Singapore’s history, culture and practices. The course will also include how to integrate into the local context of working with families and colleagues and living in our multicultural, multi-racial society. Participants will also gain insights to Singapore’s EC landscape, current policy and frameworks.

Note

This course is mandatory for the following groups who have yet to apply for educator certification from ECDA as of 1 January 2025*:

  • Foreigners and possess local** or foreign EC qualifications; or
  • Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents and possess foreign EC qualifications with no local EC qualifications***.

Applicants in the two categories above who meet educator certification requirements will be given conditional certification level for 6 months and are required to complete the course during this period. Educators who do so will receive re-certification.

* This does not apply to those with existing certification levels, who are applying for another certification level.
**Trainees who have completed a local ECDA-accredited pre-service qualification before 1 Jan 2025 are not required to take the Mandatory Course.
***Local EC qualifications refer to ECDA-recognised or accredited pre-service training programmes.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • discuss Singapore’s multi-cultural, multi-racial context and family values in relation to preschool practices;
  • discuss Singapore’s EC landscape, current policy and frameworks;
  • support children’s safety, health and social-emotional well-being;
  • apply appropriate use of language and vocabulary in relating to young children;
  • determine suitable and appropriate early childhood activities;
  • express ways to build mental and emotional resilience; and
  • discover how to work with parents, colleagues and stakeholders as a team in a diverse cultural setting.
Upon Completion

Upon completion of the course, you will be awarded a Certificate of Attainment from the National Institute of Early Childhood Development (NIEC).

Entry Requirements

This course is for individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Have completed an ECDA-recognised certificate or diploma in early childhood care and education.
  • Be ECDA-certified as an EY1/EY2/L1/L2 teacher.
  • Currently employed in a childcare centre registered or licensed with ECDA.
