Positive and Responsive Experiences for Young Children: The Abecedarian Approach

About Course

This course prepares early childhood professionals to implement the Abecedarian Approach of teaching and learning strategies to improve outcomes of vulnerable children through intentional adult-child interaction and children’s language acquisition.  Learners will be taught the history and methods of the Abecedarian Approach, and how to build children’s language skills through relationships, play, and daily life activities.

This course is offered in partnership with KidStart.

Note: This course will be conducted face-to-face.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • tap on small steps in learning that occur in the earliest years of life;
  • articulate the adult’s role in promoting strong child outcomes;
  • demonstrate understanding of the four key elements of the Abecedarian Approach as well as why they have a powerful effect on child development and learning,
  • use a wide variety of playful and effective activities at any moment; and
  • describe and apply the Abecedarian Approach strategies and techniques during daily interactions with young children, integrating them into current ECE practices.
Upon Completion

Upon completion of the course, you will be awarded a Certificate of Attainment from the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA).

Entry Requirements

This course is for individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Have completed an ECDA-recognised certificate or diploma in early childhood care and education.
  • Be ECDA-certified as an EY1/EY2/L1/L2 teacher.
  • Currently employed in a childcare centre registered or licensed with ECDA.
