Share your passion for the Tamil Language and culture with young children by exposing them to Tamil history, literature and culture. You will also learn about child development so you can design and deliver appropriate language and literacy programmes. Additionally, you get to apply what you have learnt in a 3-month internship with a preschool where you will be teaching Tamil language and literacy.
This course is conducted by NIEC in collaboration with Ngee Ann Polytechnic at the NIEC (NP) campus. It is a professional qualification recognised by the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) for practice as a preschool teacher in Singapore.

Graduating O-level Student
Aggregate type: ELR2B2-A
O-level English (EL) Grades 1 – 6*
Any one of the below:
Higher Tamil Grades 1 – 4
Tamil Grades 1 – 2
Any other 3 O-level subjects (excluding CCA) Grades 1 - 6**
*All applicants with a C5 or C6 in EL in the O-Level examination are given two years from the point of teacher registration to obtain at least a B4 or a minimum of band 6.5 in the International English Language Testing System (Academic).
** You must also have sat for Mathematics (Elementary/Additional) and fulfil the aggregate computation requirements.
The main medium of instruction for all these subjects must be in English, except for a language subject.
Please take note that in order to be granted teacher certification status to teach up to Kindergarten levels by Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA), new teachers must have a minimum of a B4 grade for English Language (EL). Those with a C5 or C6 in EL are given 2 years from the point of teacher registration to obtain either a B4 or any acceptable EL alternatives. Click here for the list of acceptable EL alternatives.
Graduating Higher Nitec Student
- Higher Nitec GPA of at least 3.0 (inclusive of CCA bonus points)
- O-level English (EL) Grades 1 – 6
The Diploma in Tamil Studies with Early Education is awarded by the National Institute of Early Childhood Development in collaboration with Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The diploma fulfils the professional qualifications of a Level 2 category of teacher. You may teach any level from Pre-Nursery, Nursery to K1 and K2. Upon graduation, you are certified as a Tamil Language preschool educator. You may also apply to MOE to be a primary school Tamil Language teacher if you meet MOE’s criteria.
