狮城有约 | 用视频鼓励幼儿学华语 要注意三件事 [Translation: Hello Singapore | Three things to pay attention to when using videos to encourage young children to learn Chinese]
Ms Corinne Madelyn Fan Wai Foong, Programme Head at NIEC (NP), was featured in an 8world Hello Singapore interview on 24 April along with two other guests, discussing how parents can help their children transition to Primary One. During the interview, they talked about the importance of creating a supportive environment to help children learn Mandarin.
Corinne emphasised the importance of being intentional and consistent in nurturing children’s Mandarin learning. She advised parents to use technology wisely by choosing content that is developmentally appropriate, actively guiding their children during screen time, and setting clear time limits. Corinne highlighted that early exposure to the language between the ages of zero to six can offer certain advantages, but she stressed that language acquisition should be a continuous and interest-driven process. She encouraged parents to collaborate closely with teachers to extend learning beyond the classroom and focus on cultivating their children’s interest in the language through engaging activities such as storybooks and games.
