狮城有约 | 育儿有方:上很多课 (Translation: Hello Singapore: Parenting Well: Taking too many classes)
NIEC Faculty’s Senior Lecturer, Huang Fang, recently shared her insights on enrichment classes in a segment on Channel 8’s Hello Singapore programme, as reported by 8 World. The piece, aired on July 26, Wednesday, highlighted parent Chen Xinhui’s efforts to provide her four children with more learning opportunities through enrichment classes and activities.
The segment observed that many parents are concerned about their children falling behind and, in their efforts, strive to offer abundant learning opportunities to maximise their strengths. However, this anxious parental attitude can have varying degrees of impact on the children.
Huang Fang emphasised that the key to a child’s optimal development and early childhood education is not to keep them constantly busy. Instead, the focus should be on allowing the child to evolve into their best self. When selecting a curriculum, parents should consider their child’s interests, such as music or sports, and refrain from pressuring them into activities they do not enjoy.
Additionally, Huang Fang recommended incorporating outdoor activities alongside classroom learning to enhance the child’s overall development.
