Cool it with the hothousing
As part of CBD’s outreach and media efforts, MOE’s Schoolbag.sg featured NIEC faculty Ms Nur Azlina Binte Subari, Lead Lecturer at NIEC, in an article addressing the pressures of “hothousing” young children—where they face excessive academic demands from an early age. Drawing from her expertise in early childhood education, Azlina highlighted the importance of allowing children to develop at their own pace. She emphasised that an overemphasis on academic success can lead to stress and burnout, urging parents to adopt a more balanced approach that integrates play, exploration, and meaningful interactions.
Azlina also shared practical strategies for fostering a supportive learning environment at home, where children feel encouraged to explore, make mistakes, and build confidence naturally. By promoting holistic development over early academic acceleration, she reinforced the importance of nurturing a child’s intrinsic love for learning—an approach aligned with NIEC’s commitment to best practices in early childhood education.
