Introduction to the ECHO Framework: Pre-Service Online Course

About Course

This course is developed in collaboration with KKH Department of Child Development. 

In this course, learners will be equipped with the basic tools all EIPIC practitioners require for early intervention. The Early Childhood Holistic Outcomes (ECHO) Framework will be introduced and learners will learn to carry out observations and interviews and to use the documentation for writing learning outcomes for children. Key concepts and terminologies such as Global Child Outcome (GCO), Behaviour Description (BD), School Routines Observation (SRO) will become the repertoire of knowledge learners will acquire, and skills such as conducting GCO Meetings and writing functional goals will be included.

Note: Learners will complete this asynchronous online course within 3 months

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the Global Child Outcome (GCO) Process;
  • Write high-quality Behaviour Description (BD) using the Action-Trigger-Context (ATC) format;
  • Differentiate functional performance behaviour from capacity and challenging behaviours;
  • Conduct an SRO;
  • Conduct a home interview with a caregiver and document high-quality home BDs;
  • Classify BDs into the relevant GCO themes and threads;
  • Evaluate the quality of BDs using the BD Checklist;
  • Identify the key components of a GCO Summary;
  • Explain ways to derive an Functional Age Estimate (FAE);
  • Explain the steps to conduct a GCO Meeting;
  • Apply the ‘P-CAT’ format when writing a functional goal; and
  • Explain the differences between the GCO Entry, Review and Exit Processes.
Upon Completion

Upon completion of the course, you will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from the National Institute of Early Childhood Development (NIEC).

Entry Requirements

This course is for individuals who meet the following criterion:

  • EI practitioners and/or Allied Health Professionals who are currently employed in or engaged by a government-funded EI centre.
