Outdoors as the Extended Classroom for 5 and 6-Year-Olds
About Course
Design and facilitate stimulating outdoor experiences for children aged 5 and 6 years old to play, explore and discover. In this 2-day course, you will learn how pedagogy planning can contribute to each child’s learning and development beyond the classroom.
You will be involved in different activities for children in diverse outdoor contexts, from physical play to imaginative storytelling. You will also better understand the guiding principles, theoretical perspectives, and practical knowledge to enhance children’s learning and development in the outdoors.
To build your confidence in navigating nature’s playground, the course will guide you in conducting risk-benefit assessment, so you can develop a safe and supportive outdoor environment for the children.
Note: This course will be conducted face-to-face.
Learners will be equipped with the knowledge and skills in the following:
- Develop an understanding of current research and the benefits behind outdoor learning.
- Generate ideas for meaningful and engaging outdoor learning spaces for 5 and 6-year-olds.
- Apply the NEL Framework for outdoor learning activities.
- Identify potential outdoor learning spaces and resources existing in their preschools.
- Identify benefit-risk assessment strategies in developing safe and thought-provoking outdoor learning environments.
