Enter the ‘career imposters’: Gen Zs flipping the script on career fulfilment
Ms Kamini Manivannan, a graduate of NIEC’s Diploma (Conversion) in Early Childhood Care and Education – Teaching (DECCE-T) course, was featured in The Straits Times on 3 May 2025. Ms Kamini made a career switch from public relations to early childhood education in search of deeper personal and professional fulfilment. A communication studies graduate from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), she began her career in PR, achieving several professional milestones. However, she found herself feeling emotionally unfulfilled and distanced from her personal values. A heartfelt conversation with her mother became the turning point that prompted her to realign her career with her long-standing interest in working with children.
During her studies, she gained practical experience through multiple part-time roles, including teaching assistant, tutor, and creative writing instructor. Despite taking a significant pay cut and initial concerns from her family, she remained committed to her new path. Ms Kamini is now a preschool teacher at Trehaus and is further advancing her expertise by pursuing a master’s degree in early childhood education. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of aligning one’s career with personal values and passion, beyond financial considerations.
