Mentoring 101: Bringing Out the Best in EC Educators will replace Mentoring Novice Teachers with effect from May 2021.

 

Applicants must complete Mentoring 101 before progressing to Mentoring 201: Bringing Out the Best in EC Educators, subject to entry requirements.


This course Mentoring 101: Bringing Out the Best in EC Educators focuses on equipping learners with concepts and skills to mentor student teachers and interns. It is a pre-requisite for hosting interns. Learners will develop an understanding of the mentoring process, its goals, and benefits of mentoring for different stakeholders.

 

The course will also cover:

  • The roles and expectations of mentors and mentees,
  • The phases in attitude towards teaching that student teachers and interns go through and the support from mentors,
  • The importance of building positive and trusting relationships,
  • Skills of effective mentoring, and
  • Planning of a structured induction and training programme.

 

Note: This course will be conducted via online learning until further notice.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Examine the goals, and benefits of mentoring for different stakeholders.

  • Examine the roles and expectations of mentors and mentees.

  • Recognise the phases in attitude towards teaching that student teachers, and interns go through and the support from mentors.

  • Examine what constitute positive and trusting relationships.

  • Demonstrate interaction skills that build trust and positive relationships.

  • Apply skills of effective mentoring for students on practicum and internship.

  • Plan a structured induction for mentees and a training programme for interns.

  • Demonstrate how to support interns’ and student teachers’ well-being as they ease into the Beginning Teacher phase.

Entry Requirements

This course is for individuals who meet the following criteria: 

  • Have completed an ECDA-recognised certificate or diploma in early childhood care and education.

  • Be ECDA-certified as L1 teacher (Educarer 1, Educarer 2).

  • Be ECDA-certified as L2 teacher (Senior Educarer, Preschool Teacher, Senior Preschool Teacher, Lead Teacher, Senior Lead Teacher, Centre Leader, Senior Centre Leader).

  • Currently employed in a childcare centre registered or licensed with ECDA.

Upon Completion

Upon completion of the course, you will be awarded a Certificate of Attainment from the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA).

 

You may also progress to Mentoring 201: Bringing Out the Best in EC Educators, subject to entry requirements.
